Janice Doughman LNHA
Administrator
Janice has a completely unique background for a nursing home administrator, but she totally makes it work and is one of our friendliest and most cheerful administrators. She has been an administrator in the healthcare industry since 2001 but was in the Air Force for 9 years before that. That’s actually where she decided she wanted to be a nursing home administrator. She would visit nursing homes and absolutely fell in love with the atmosphere and decided to make it her career. She started that part of her career by earning her Master’s degree in Health Care Management (and a law degree on the side) from John Hopkins University.
Slate Valley Center filled all her dreams because she “loves working here and loves being a part of something bigger than just an individual facility. Well, that and Slate Valley is the most fun!” In her spare time, which she has very little of, Janice spends time with her 3 cats and her dog. She even brings her dog to work with her, so make sure to say hi when you come visit.

Wendy Wells PT
Director of Rehabilitation
Wendy has been at Slate Valley for four years now but brings with her over 15 years of experience in the field. She received her MSPT from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She loves working at Slate Valley Center because of the rural, familial atmosphere that is so pervasive in the facility. In her spare time, Wendy likes to travel, especially to Alaska where her family lives. She also likes to garden and volunteer at her son’s school. What Wendy loves most about working with the residents is learning each resident’s history and personal story.
Monica Ward LSW
Director of Social Services
Most people think of social workers as – well – social workers; solving issues like smoothing the transition from a hospital to a skilled nursing facility or cutting through some of the red tapes that always seem to entangle us. But we see Monica as a caregiver first, then as a social worker. She approaches every individual the way a doctor would, learning about the individual’s background, current condition, goals, family status, and more. When Monica develops a social work care plan, it’s guaranteed to be custom-tailored to ensure that your goals are met. Her blend of healing the body, mind, and spirit is just what’s needed to push the stresses of healthcare decision-making aside. When she isn’t taking care of her family here at Slate Valley, she’s taking care of her “other” family – the one at home, often hiking in the beautiful mountains that surround us. And when she’s not outdoors, she might be engaged in another favorite activity: Monica is an author of children’s books. But despite her busy schedule, she’ll be the first to tell you, there’s always time to help one more resident.
